[...] 1. Bryan Bostic, bringing baseball back to Richmond You don’t read Bryan Bostic’s name in the media much these days. And that’s probably to his liking. No more “no comments” and no more photos that his wife complained were unflattering. You never got the sense he enjoyed dealing with the media. (Even though he talked with RBS in a story here.)
As a resident of Durham North Carolina I can second the comments about the Durham Bulls ballpark. The stadium and the accompanying American Tobacco Campus renovation have literally transformed downtown. Richmond already has a vibrant area in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom and the population that would support a baseball team. Adding a stadium to the mix would be a win-win situation for the city, the developers, and the fans. Mr. Bostic also has the right attitude about the goals of the team. Family friendly entertainment, inexpensive concessions, fireworks nights, etc. are an essential part of a successful team. Of course winning would be nice too, but as the Bulls have proved, you don't always have to win to be a profitable and beneficial enterprise.

I wrote this before in response to an article about a banner opposing the ball park but thought it waranted repeating;

We as citizens need to be behind urban redevelopment and the improvement of our city and its venues. Has anyone been to downtown Durham before and after the Bull's park was built? It’s a case of "Utter blight to shear delight" as far as their downtown is concerned, and the ballpark is the centerpiece and catalyst of the transformation.

The real story is that people need to understand that IT’S NOT ABOUT THE BASEBALL. It’s about revitalization of the core of a historic city and the combined confidence such a project demonstrates from that city’s government and business community. Confidence and reassurance in the downtown area as a safe and welcoming destination for entertainment and diversion not available in their nearby suburban shopping malls. I like baseball as much as the next guy, but it’s only a means to an end. To call the transformation of the Shockoe Bottom that is possible through this venture to be an issue about baseball is like calling Million Dollar Baby a movie about boxing.

Hint: it’s about life
