Some great reporting and analysis on a story we broke yesterday. Shutting down production of Qimonda AG’s computer memory-chip manufacturing plant in eastern Henrico County means the loss of 1,500-plus high-paying tech jobs and millions of dollars in tax revenue to the county and the state.

Problems Spring Up in Small-Business Loans (WSJ)
The U.S. government’s Small Business Administration said losses from loans made through its lending programs more than doubled in 2008, reaching nearly $1.3 billion. In 2007, the SBA charged off — or took permanent losses against — $504 million of the loans; in 2005, it charged off a much smaller $276 million.

here is something arbitrary about the endowment brigade’s wish to freeze newspaper newsroom size at its high watermark. There’s also something disconcerting about wanting to divorce the newspaper from market pressures. (If I wanted that sort of news product, I’d watch The NewsHour.)
