The lease isn't prohibitive. Again, Carytown is an outstanding value, especially when stacked up against strip centers, corporate models (like Short Pump Town Center), or other shopping districts in VA, like Old Town Alexandria. Naturally, each business model will perform differently, but the lease is actually a good value.

We sold snowboards, wakeboards, skateboards (but more importantly; the culture and lifestyle of those sports) at that location for ten years. A significant milestone for small, locally-owned retail. Customer service and unique offerings are KEY in Carytown.

Chris is absolutely right about the location. In my mind, there is NO better location for retail in the city of Richmond. Having owned Glass & Powder Boardshop at that location, I can attest to the steady traffic and great clientele in the city. Our shop closing had nothing to do with the validity of this location, but rather expansion AWAY from this core shopping area led to our demise.

Carytown is the heart of Richmond. In economic times like this, its even more incumbent upon each person in Richmond to support one another - and that means other local merchants. If you value Plan 9, World of Mirth, River City Cellars, Lex's, Pink, and all the other fantastic merchants that live, work, and raise their families in the city, then make it a point to buy from local merchants.

If you're a retailer and you're considering a new location, this corner in Carytown is the BEST. I don't own, manage, or have anything to do with the property, it's just my educated opinion.

Board Paradise appeared to be a simple liquidator outlet with randomly selected gear from previously discounted vendors. This was a stark contrast from the award winning local board shop Glass & Powder specialty retailer you mentioned. Any suggestion/comparison/inference that 'location' played a part in the demise is certainly short-sighted on the author's part in my opinion. 10+ years, and 1000's of loyal fans, shoppers, and G&P fans would probably agree, that the owners did more for Carytown, the community, and their loved sports, than anyone else in the area; and are sadly missed - unlike the unknown store that 'whatever it's name is' that got a sign put on it's door today; where few will probably pause to say good goodbye or care (except for the building owner).
