In the company’s latest legal defeat, a Florida jury ordered Philip Morris USA to pay a 61-year-old former smoker with emphysema $300 million in punitive and compensatory damages.

The lawsuit is the result of a 2006 Florida Supreme Court decision that de-certified a class-action case and allowed for individual suits, according to the firm. The $300 million verdict is the largest tobacco verdict in Florida to follow from the 2006 decision, the firm said.
Altria, based in Richmond, Virginia, said it will seek “further review” of the verdict.
