Xenith Bank president and CEO Galyon Layfield has been waiting more than a year to say that.
Richmond-based Xenith Bank originally wanted to start a new bank from scratch, but because federal regulators were not letting new banks form, the founders bought a bank in Hampton Roads. That slowed them down considerably.

Business Assistance Dept. to make paperwork easier

The Virginia Department of Business Assistance has upgraded its Business One-Stop website, which lets entrepreneurs find out how to start a business in the state and assists them in filling out forms.
Phase 1, which was completed in 2008, let users answer a few questions online and get a list of steps, plus a list of resources, said Will Vehrs, a spokesperson for the agency.

We’ve picked seven of the most innovative business people to highlight. Surely there are others, but you'll have to keep reading RBS in 2010 as we discover them.
7. Peter Vinci, Vinci Pro
When you talk to lots of startups, you hear a common refrain: “We just don’t have the money for marketing, and that’s what we need to get the word out.” Peter Vinci found a way around that. The Richmond-based maker of baseball mitts – run by a father/son team – gives them to minor league players, and when those players move up to the big leagues, they stick with their glove. The company sells more than 65 types of gloves and styles that cost between $50 and $250. The company was featured in Fortune and an RBS story .
The Herd: An attorney retires
Chuck Long is retiring after 47 years at Hirschler Fleisher, according to an email sent to the staff. Long’s principal areas of practice were commercial real estate and mergers and acquisitions. He went to Princeton for his undergraduate degree and received a law degree from Harvard.
There are likely several more departures from Hirschler Fleisher, according to several sources at the firm.
