Canadian software firm opening Richmond office

ngrainNGRAIN, a Canadian software company, is planning to set up a Richmond office to better serve its military clients here in the state.

Troy Welch will be director of the new office, who has been working for the company for the last two and a half years from his home in Colonial Heights. Welch said the office will have 10 employees, five of whom will be new hires. The entire company has 79 employees.

The company creates interactive 3-D simulations of equipment and facilities, primarily for training purposes.

“For instance, a Humvee: They want to be able to train them on how to pull the engine out. The best way to do that is in the simulation world, so we created the engine of the Humvee via photographs and manuals,” said Welch.

The Richmond location was selected because of its proximity between Washington and Norfolk, as well as the new training center at Fort Lee, said Welch. He also said the company is looking to get into creating simulations for the medical industry.

NGRAIN software is available for under $3,000. Custom simulations range between $50,000 and $1 million and up depending on the customer’s requirements and complexity of equipment.

The location for the office is still to be determined, hopefully by the first of the year, said Welch.
