This message is to Julie. The state will save money by getting rid of the employees in the liquor stores. The employees in th ABC Stores are state employees. The state shouldn't be in the liquor business. Julie doesn't the lottery and the county stickers we purchase help pay for education. I live in Fairfax County and they're cutting educaton programs, therefore the ABC sales aren't doing enough if funding is being cut. Virginia is the only state that is trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes the liquor business. Other states across the nation are doing fine and can promote Happy Hour specials but VA have a problem with doing that. It doesn't make sense. Advising the patrons that you have happy hour specials shouldn't be a big deal.

What would happen to the education monies from the sales at ABC - would private owners have to pay into education funds?

Would state still supply liquor? Regulate?

What would happen to employees from the stores? Main office? Regulatory? Would they be guaranteed jobs? Health insurance? Retirement?

Do you plan to sell current locations?

How much would it cost?

That's the main thing that we need to see. More privatization.

I hope the guy above me disagrees with the smoking ban as well. If not, he'd be a hypocrite.

I heard the potential for VA Liquor sales privatization was one of the reasons every major corner in Richmond and most cities in VA went to CVS, WalGreens, and the such. Do you think there is any truth to this rumor? Makes since, from a brand and market share move - for national big-box-stores to jump in early, don't you think?

...and now for a fun rant/commentary:

As far as 'happy hour' signage and such... what a crock to restrict such free speech in the first place. Have the law-makers of VA noticed every prime time teen show features kids drinking. Ever seen Jersey Shore, or 90210? Me neither - but the ads/trailers promote drinking more than a few signs outside a bar. BTW, anyone notice there are no laws or enforcement for promoting 'happy hour's on Facebook, Twitter, and the like? This is where people are planning their social days anyway. In the words of Wallace, bring it on - let the bars/restaurants do what they need to do to stay in business and tell the world what they want to say..... FREEEEEEEDOM!!!!!!!!

PS: For those conservatives out there, remember - self discipline, and under-age responsibility lessons start at home. Give a kid a wad of cash, Visa card, and BMW, at 17, and NO signage or marketing by your local restaurant is going to make a difference in their 'drinking lives. My point is simply - who are these restrictive free speech laws trying to protect anyway?
