Attack of the pink whales

Amy David August 18, 2011 6

Richmond is about to get even preppier.

On Wednesday, Connecticut-based retailer Vineyard Vines announced its plan to open a store in Richmond in November.

The company’s line is distinguished by a pink whale logo.

The retailer also markets to the collge crowd, with a line of more than 50 handbags and ties for specific colleges.

The Stamford-based company launched in 1998 and has 20 retail locations across the country.

This will be the first store for the area, but the company sells some of its products in Saks Fifth Avenue at Stony Point, Franco’s at Short Pump Town Center and Pink Palm on River Road.

Besides Richmond, the company plans to open new stores in Massachusetts, Texas and New Jersey.

RBS was unable to learn if the company had already chosen a location. Stay tuned to BizSense to find out where the store is going.

Three of the new locations are where Taubman has centers… Looks like Stony Point Fashion Park in between Tiffany & Co and Cole Haan.

That’s all we need – another store for insufferable hipsters

@ Mark. Clearly you unaware of the brand – Hipsters could not afford or ever get caught dead wearing Vineyard Vines.

Target consumer of VV isn’t hipsters, its middle class consumers with a bit of free space in their revolving credit lines that are trying to “keep up with the Jones’s.” Even if it was directed towards hipsters, what’s the big deal? Hipsters are the easiest audience to cater towards:

    1) Get a cheap lease in a dead real estate market
    2) Throw down a few overstuffed couches from local thrift stores
    3) Allow local artists to hang wall pieces for free
    4) Serve sandwiches/wraps/soups that include no protein and sell them at 4x food cost
    5) Hire a few cooks that want to work there for the “cool” factor and pay them $8 an hour
