Carytown BBQ joint closes

Amy David September 22, 2011 4

Double T’s Real Smoked Barbecue on West Cary Street has recently closed its doors.

A sign in the window says the owner, Tom Taveggia, has retired and a new restaurant will move into the space in November.

Double T’s has operated right across the street from the Byrd Theatre since 1999.

Stay tuned to Biz Sense for an updated story.

Yep, saw this coming. Quality, selection, service, portion size went way down. Last time we ate there we all agreed DT’s was on it’s last legs. We kept ording items on the menu and the waitress kept coming back saying there were out. What a shame, it was good barbeque and their sides (cowboy beans, baked corn) were unique. I hate to see one of the last reasonably-priced family-friendly restaurants in Carytown replaced by another hip $50 a plate places.

The portions were skimpy and the prices were too high so I’m not sure where the value was. I experienced the same problem of them running out of items. The fact is that there are numerous affordable, family friendly restaurants in Carytown. Mary Angelos, Coppolas, Ginger, Thai Diner, Mom Siam, NY Deli, Galaxy Diner, Weezies, Stuzzi, Cafe Ole, Basilis, Carytown Burgers and Fries, Jean Jaques, multiple sushi joints, Nacho Mamas, and on and on so I’m not sure what people are concerned about. There are certainly no shortage of BBQ joints in town, and this one wasn’t even sniffing the top 10. This is a great opportunity for someone. If the fine folks behind Garnett’s and Roosevelt are listening, I hope that you consider this for your next masterpiece.

I live on the southside and only ate there a few times, the last being a couple years ago. Always enjoyed it and thought it was one of the best BBQ places in town. Of course, that was a while ago. Sorry to read that things changed.

went to eat there today only to find out it is closed. majorly disappointed. the bbq was so good – i loved that it came plain and you could add your choice of sauces as you were eating. i agree the service was going downhill.. not to mention this one woman (daughter or daughter-in-law of owner?) always yelling at her put-upon husband, not seeming to care there were customers around. still, the food was good and, while the prices were a little high, the food was definitely filling. i’ll miss this place. and btw, cafe ole next door is NOT good.
