Expanding by the swarm

MosquitoThe sound of mosquitoes buzzing is bad news for most, but it’s music to the ears of one local company.

Richmond-based pest-killing company Mosquito Squad recently announced its expansion of more than a dozen new franchises.

Scott Zide, president of Mosquito Squad parent Outdoor Living Brands, said the company will look to add 25 to 35 franchises in 2012.

“It will be primarily in the North, Northeast and Southeast,” said Zide.

Mosquito Squad will open locations in Illinois, Michigan, South Dakota, New Jersey, Virginia, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The company has eight locations in Virginia, including two in Richmond, and one planned for Suffolk.

Zide said Mosquito Squad has experienced rapid growth over the past few years.

“Since 2009, it’s grown from 17 locations to now more than 75,” Zide said. “The goal is to continue that growth.”

The company was founded in 2005 and was acquired by Outdoor Living Brands in January 2009.

Mosquito Squad recently made Inc. Magazine’s 5,000 fastest growing companies list in August. It brought in $4.3 million in revenue for 2010, an increase of 498 percent over the past three years.

“Homeowners are spending more time at their homes and want to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces,” he said.

Adios Mosquitoes, a local competitor, is also on the expansion track. Read more about that here.
