Private school announces leadership shift

A local private school is going headhunting.

The Steward School, which offers junior kindergarten through 12th grade at its western Henrico County campus, on Tuesday announced the departure of headmaster Kenneth H. Seward. The move took effect Nov. 30.

Dan Frank will serve as interim head of school during the search for Seward’s replacement, the school said in a news release. Frank is the director of Steward’s upper school, which includes grades 9 through 12.

Steward said Seward is taking a sabbatical to complete a memoir on the Vietnam War.

Seward will assist with the leadership transition, the school said. There are no plans for him to return to the school, said Lisa Dwelle, associate head of school, finance and operations.

According to the release, Seward and the school’s board of trustees “reached mutually agreeable terms that will allow Mr. Seward to continue his professional career in education as the school seeks a new leader to direct the school’s future.”

Dwelle would not elaborate on the terms.

Dwelle said a search for a headmaster can take as long as 18 months because of the timing of the school year. The job had not been posted Tuesday, and the school hasn’t selected a company to spearhead the search.

Seward, who could not be reached for comment Tuesday, was Steward’s headmaster since 2004.

He previously was head of school at the Roeper School in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., from 1998 to 2004, Steward said. Frank, the interim headmaster, started at Steward in 2007 and has more than 20 years of education experience.

Steward was founded in 1972 and has more than 600 students. Tuition for this school year ranges from $9,100 for half-day junior kindergarten students to $21,110 for full-day upper school students.
