The latest addition to the Short Pump restaurant scene will be dished out next month.

Carrabba’s Italian Grill, a national restaurant chain, will open Jan. 13 in West Broad Village. The 6,564-square-foot restaurant is at 11237 W. Broad St., between Chuy’s and Bonefish Grill.

Carrabba’s spokeswoman Elizabeth Watts said almost 150 employees have been hired for the restaurant, which can seat 246.

Ryan Barnard is the proprietor, and Abdel Rafai is the joint venture partner.

Watts would not disclose how much the restaurant cost to build. According to Henrico County records, a $650,000 building permit was granted in June for Carrabba’s. The parcel is owned by Excel Trust, the San Diego REIT that bought much of West Broad Village from developer Unicorp for $161 million in late 2012.

The contractor on the restaurant project was Crossection.

Carrabba’s has almost 240 locations across the country, including one at Chesterfield Towne Center, according to the company’s website.

Barnard said Bloomin’ Brands, the restaurant’s parent corporation, thought Short Pump would be a perfect spot for another Carrabba’s.

“We’ve had great success with Carrabba’s in Midlothian,” he said.

Bloomin’ Brands owns Carrabba’s, Outback Steakhouse, Bonefish Grill and other national chains.

Also under construction at West Broad Village is a 24,000-square-foot location for Golfsmith, a chain of golf retail stores. It’s located to the east of REI on one of the last remaining commercial sites at the mixed-use development and will be Golfsmith’s first Richmond location.

I’m not normally a fan of chains, but Carrabba’s is one of those rare chain restaurants that stands out from the crowd. It’s a great addition to Short Pump.

I wonder if more parking, i.e. another parking deck, will be built to accommodate more restaurant patrons as well as the store patrons in that area. Otherwise, there doesn’t seem to be enough parking currently available.
