A presidential undertaking for local ad firm

A Glen Allen advertising agency is taking on an unusual task — making Calvin Coolidge cool.

The Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation in Vermont recently hired the Bergman Group to redo its website in an effort to drum up some attention for America’s 30th president.

Known as “Silent Cal,” Coolidge rose to the presidency after the death of Warren G. Harding in 1923 and held the office until 1929.

Unless you’re a history buff, you probably don’t know much about President Coolidge. He doesn’t hold the same place in history as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. He’s not a pop culture icon like JFK, Richard Nixon or Bill Clinton.

But the Coolidge foundation hopes to change that. Started in 1960, the group is trying to reintroduce Coolidge to Americans and bring his wisdom to light.

Simply put, the group’s theme is, “It’s time for Coolidge.”

“There’s a lot to learn from the presidency of Coolidge,” Bergman Group founder Bill Bergman said. “How do you take that passion and make it interesting for somebody who maybe took just a history course in college?”CoolidgeFoundation

The Bergman Group’s campaign focuses on Coolidge’s often overlooked presidential accomplishments. He balanced the budget every year he was in office, cut income-tax rates and reduced the federal budget.

The firm has learned a lot about the former president in the three months it has been working on the website, Bergman said. It’s not the agency’s first brush with presidential history, however. It has the George W. Bush Foundation as a client.

CoolidgeFoundation.org , includes a “Coolidge Quote of the Day,” a countdown clock to the 100th anniversary of his inauguration , and an “Ask Coolidge” feature where visitors can pose questions for the former president to answer. Since Coolidge has been dead for decades, however, the questions are thoughtfully answered by Coolidge historians who try to answer as though he might have.

The project’s budget was not made public.

The revamped site comes not long after the release of historian Amity Shlaes’ bestselling book, “Coolidge,” Bergman said.

“She wanted to bring more attention to Coolidge and his presidency,” Bergman explained. “What he did is relevant in 2014. There’s a lot to be learned from his presidency. Let’s try to see what we can learn and apply today.”
