A Carytown coffee shop has closed as its new owner brings in his brand of coffee and paninis.
Last month Claudio Ragazzi bought Carytown Bistro & Coffee House at 3200 W. Cary St. In May, he plans to reopen the 1,000-square-foot space as 10, an Italian café and wine bar.
The venture will be Ragazzi’s second Richmond eatery. In 2009, he opened Caffespresso at 1127 Gaskins Road.
Ragazzi said he approached Carytown Bistro owner Charles Thompson about 18 months ago to talk about buying the business. Ragazzi would not say how much he paid for it.
“The patio was really what drove me to this specific location,” Ragazzi said. The space sits on the corner of West Cary and South Auburn streets.
Bedros Bandazian of real estate brokerage Bandazian & Holden handled the sale of Carytown Bistro, along with Charles Thompson, who is an agent at Bandazian.
Thompson could not be reached for comment. The property is owned by Vasilios and Ange Koutsos, according to a city record.
Much like Caffespresso, 10 will serve espresso, paninis and salads, with most items costing less than $10. Beer and wine will be served, as well.
“Carytown is a place where in the afternoon people will actually drink a glass wine,” Ragazzi said.
The patio will include a cart serving coffee drinks. Ragazzi said he plans to have musical acts on weekends.
The name, 10, is a reference to Ragazzi’s soccer jersey number. He has Italian language classes and trips to Italy also in the works.
As for competition, Ragazzi said he thinks there is plenty of room in Carytown for another coffee shop.
“A real coffee shop is not there,” he said. “Capital Coffee [& Desserts at 2928 W. Cary] is far from me.”
