A gift shop with more than 50 years in business is saying goodbye.

Kelley’s Gift Shop at 5601 Patterson Ave. will close April 26. Owner Cynthia Coldwell said the decision to close was made after co-owner Sara Jane Leggett died of cancer in December 2013. Leggett was 66.

“This business was a labor of love for both of us,” Coldwell said. “It required the combined talents of both of us.”

Kelley’s sells gifts for various holidays and occasions. Its pre-lit Christmas trees, for example, sell for $500 to $700.

Coldwell is discounting much of her inventory as she winds down her business. What isn’t sold will be auctioned off online.

Coldwell and Leggett bought the shop in 2003 from a former owner. Its namesake, D. Page Kelley, started the business around 1960 in the corner of his father’s store on Forest Hill Avenue before moving to a spot in the Village Shopping Center. The store moved in 2001 to the Patterson Avenue location.

Rejena Carreras of nearby Carreras Jewelers owns the 4,000 square-foot Kelley’s space. The property is under contract to be acquired, said Jim Ashby, a broker with Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer who is handling the listing for Carreras.

Coldwell, 64, said she is waiting until Kelley’s goes dark before making future plans.

“I made a conscious decision not to make a decision until I do this closing process,” Coldwell said. “I will probably do a little traveling and let the thoughts filter through until I find what I’m meant to be doing.”
