Another twist for Mint

Before it had a chance to open, a planned new downtown canal-front restaurant has been scrapped and quickly replaced with a new brand.

Mint Gastropub by Malcolm Mitchell will not open as planned inside F.W. Sullivan’s Canal Bar & Grille at 1001 Haxall Point. The space intended for Mitchell will now serve as the Mint Room and will be part of F.W. Sullivan’s.

“We thought it was going to be difficult to run two totally different brands in one location,” Mitchell said. “We decided to say, ‘Let’s just go ahead and part ways.’”

The change coincides with a rebranding that changes the name of F.W. Sullivan’s Canal Bar & Grille to Haxall Point by F.W. Sullivan’s. Owner Jake Crocker said the Mint Room will have its own menu and open next week. The 1,000-square-foot space, which is still under construction, can seat 35 to 40 people.

“It’s going to be a more intimate dining experience,” Crocker said. “We’re really targeting people coming into downtown looking for a nice dining experience.”

The original Mint Gastropub at 2501 W. Main St. in the Fan closed in March. Owner Amy Ayers, who still owns the Fan property, sold the business and leased the space to Charlottesville-based restaurant Continental Divide for its first Richmond location.

Mitchell said he’s already looking for a new location for Mint. Jackson Ward is high on the list.

“My intention is to keep on giving Richmond Mint’s mouth magic,” Mitchell said. “It’s coming back.”

So they’re renaming F.W. Sullivans Haxall Point? Is that going to be associated with the brewery that’s coming soon? I could have sworn there was a Haxall Brewery in the works for downtown.
