As it clears out to make way for a potential new grocery development in eastern Henrico, a local car dealer isn’t traveling far to its new home.

Bill Talley plans to move his Bill Talley Automotive dealership from 5110 S. Laburnum Ave. to his existing body shop next door. To make room for the arrival of his sales staff, Talley will renovate and expand the body shop building, located at 5250 S. Laburnum Ave.

The 4.6-acre Bill Talley Automotive property, where Talley sells used Fords, is under contract to be purchased and then set for demolition by the new owners. Talley declined to identify the buyer.

Last year, plans were filed with Henrico County for a 28,000-square-foot grocery store on the dealership property. Local brokers at the time said that the size requirements match East Coast store plans from German grocer Lidl.

Work has yet to begin, but Talley said he is aiming to move his sales staff into the expanded body shop by September or October of this year.

“Everything we’re going to put in will be so much more efficient than what we’re dealing with at the other store,” Talley said. “Plus it will have a whole new look. It’s going to look just great.”

About 30 employees will work in the building, which will provide both sales and repair services. The project is expected to cost more than $1 million.

Balzer & Associates is the architect on the project, and Century Construction Co. is the builder.

Talley said the deal works in his favor from both sides. The move will put his business in a newer and more efficient building. And he said he expects his new neighbor to draw more people to the business.

Talley plans on expanding the body shop building’s space from about 17,000 to 25,500 square feet, and the addition will include a wing for his sales staff.

He also plans to add a Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center and will enlarge the body shop area.

“My operating expenses will be a lot lower, and the departments will work together better this way,” Talley said. “It’s going to be a one-stop shopping experience for customers.”

Bill Talley Ford has operated in the Richmond area for 30 years. Talley also owns the Bill Talley Ford property in Mechanicsville, where he sells new cars, at 6280 Mechanicsville Turnpike.
