A new retailer is looking to add some sparkle to the Museum District.

Nine Roses Jewelers plans to open April 25 at 19 N. Belmont Ave.

The storefront was formerly home to Phoenix Rising, a bookstore that catered to the gay community. Nine Roses owners Eliza Spell and Nick DeRosa have a three-year lease on the 1,000-square-foot space.

Spell said Nine Roses will carry yellow gold, silver, brass, and stones like opals, sapphires and rubies. She contrasted the inventory at her shop with other jewelers’ more traditional focus on gold, diamonds and china.

Nine Roses will sell jewelers from out-of-town designers.

“It’s not going to be super funky, but definitely a less traditional vibe,” Spell said. “We hope to cater to a younger crowd.”

Spell said items at Nine Roses will be priced from $100 to $5,000. The inventory will come from designers based in New York or Los Angeles, such as Elizabeth Street Jewelry, Wwake (sic) and Communion by Joy.

The couple got into the industry by making their own jewelry. DeRosa learned the trade through an apprenticeship at The Precious Gem in Williamsburg. Spell got into it on her own after graduating with a sculpture degree from VCU. Spell has been selling items online but decided jewelry sales were better suited to traditional shopping.

“You don’t say, ‘I’m going to spend $4,000 on a ring’ before trying it on,” Spell said. “In this situation, we can be working in the back, put (an item) out right away, and see how people react to it.”

Spell would not say how much it will cost to open Nine Roses or how the venture is being financed.

Nine Roses will open near Stuzzi, Belmont Butchery and Tom French Flowers. And plenty of jewelry competition won’t be far. Nearby Carytown is home to a slew of jewelry stores including Kambourian Jewelers, AlterNatives and Schwarzschild Jewelers.

Spell said she hopes the hard-to-find jewelry Nine Roses carries will help set the shop apart and eventually lead to expansion.

“We definitely want to open more stores if this works,” Spell said. “Not in Richmond but in other places.”
