Cemetery goes under; two other companies file bankruptcy

cemeteryBusiness bankruptcies skyrocketed this week.

Three businesses have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the past few days: a cemetery outside Petersburg, a business that ran two gas stations and an excavation company in Chesterfield.

Dinwiddie Memorial Park, which lists Ronald Hess as the president, owes between $500,000 and $1 million. Read more




Activist arrested at Anthem protest

Joe Szakos walked into Anthem headquarters in Richmond on Friday demanding a refund.

A few minutes later, he walked out in police custody.

Szakos is executive director of the Virginia Organizing Project, a community organizing group. He and several other board members entered the building seeking a meeting with executives.

The organization wants a refund for its health-care premiums, because Anthem uses its profits to lobby Congress against health-care reform. Read more




Former Anthem exec sues health insurer

A former medical director at Anthem has filed a lawsuit alleging the company forced him to leave in July of 2006 after he exposed a cozy relationship with a drug company.

Dr. Randy Axelrod, 51, who was a vice president in charge of health care management for Anthem’s parent, WellPoint, claims that he was dismissed for testifying in court against pharmaceutical company Amgen Inc. Read more
