Commercial Real Estate:
Susan F. Jones, a vice president at Grubb & Ellis|Harrison & Bates, was elected to the board of directors. Jones has been with the firm for nine years and is a retail brokerage specialist. Jones is a Virginia Tech graduate.
Banking:
Virginia Business Bank has named a new president. J. Jordan O’Neill will take over immediately, according to a news release issued last week. He replaces Terrie Spiro, who had been at the helm since September 2009. She took over from Merlin Henkel, who stepped down last fall. O’Neill, who went to UVA as an undergrad and to Georgetown for his MBA, was serving as the vice president and chief lending officer since October. Prior to working at Virginia Business Bank, O’Neill worked at First Horizon Bank in Northern Virginia.
Also of note at Virginia Business Bank, Geoffrey Warner was named chief financial officer and chief operating officer. Warner is a William and Mary graduate. Mark Hourigan, who owns Hourigan Construction, has been elected chairman of the board of directors. Hourigan is an investor in the bank.
Supermarkets
A former Ukrop’s vice president will be a regional vice president for the Giant-Carlisle Division of Ahold USA. Jim Scanlon will oversee store operations for the 25 Ukrop’s stores purchased by parent of Giant/Martin’s. Scanlon attended the University of Southern Maine.
FBI
Michael Morehart has been appointed special agent in charge of the FBI’s Richmond division. Morehart was most recently a director in the security division at FBI Headquarters, according to a news release. Morehart, a Petersburg native, went to John Tyler Community College and VCU. He is also a CPA.
Nonprofits
Cindy A. Mims will take over as executive director of Neighborworks Resource Group, a nonprofit that works to help lower income families purchase homes. Mims was formerly a manager at SunTrust. Mims went to Radford, UVA and the University of Richmond.

John R. Hauserman has joined Grubb & Ellis|Harrison & Bates as an associate specializing in retail and land commercial real estate brokerage. Hauserman has a B.S. from VCU in business and real estate development.
Legal
Neil E. McCullagh has joined Spotts Fain’s Richmond office as Of Counsel to the firm and a member of the Creditors’ Rights, Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section. McCullagh is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law (1995) and of Radford University (1991).
Kevin D. Holden has joined the law firm of Jackson Lewis as a partner. Previously, Holden led the employment law practice group at the Richmond office of Kaufman & Canoles. Holden has a bachelor’s degree and law degree from Indiana University.
Thomas R. Frantz, the president and chief operating officer at the law firm Williams Mullen will become Chief Executive Officer on Feb. 1. Julious “Joey” P. Smith, Jr. will remain in the position of Chairman and James V. Meath will remain in the position of Vice Chairman. Frantz has both an undergraduate and law degree from The College of William and Mary. Frantz was elected president and chief operating officer of Williams Mullen in 2004.
Small Business:
Jeff Collins has been named a senior account manager at Sklar Technology Partners.
Lauren Nardone has been hired as vice president of marketing for Sklar Technology Partners. Previously, she worked in marketing at Philip Morris USA and The Martin Agency.
David Rayner has become a partner at TBL Networks.
Travis Witmer has joined GroundWork Design as director of special projects.

Op/Ed: Bottom Falls Out of Baseball Plan

From September 2003 until March 2008, I wrote a monthly real estate opinion column for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. On nine occasions I wrote about the renovation or replacement of the Diamond. This is obviously a story that won’t go away, as I discovered on the morning of Jan. 14 with a front-page article on the newest scheme to finance a Shockoe Ballpark with state sales tax dollars, for what appears to be a Class A or Class AA minor league baseball stadium that will cost approximately $60 million dollars. The idea is being proposed by State Del. Manoli Loupassi, who obviously hasn’t done the research to know that this is a non-starter, even though it may sound good in theory.
Before this goes any further, I am asking that Del. Loupassi as well as State Sen. Henry Marsh and Mayor Dwight Jones pick up the phone and call the City of Aberdeen, Md., to find out the risks of a baseball complex being an economic generator. Read more

Thalhimer reports Classic Construction Exteriors purchased a 2,500 square feet office/warehouse building in the Crossroads Business Center at 11624 Busy Street in Chesterfield from DSST Holdings for $315,000. The exterior remodeling company is moving from a smaller facility elsewhere in the county.
Grubb & Ellis | Harrison & Bates reports Manakin Holdings purchased the former Hon manufacturing facility (total of 375,600 square feet) at 11200 and 11300 Old Stage Road in Chesterfield County from HNI Corporation for $5.3 million. The facility is currently tenanted by Virginia T’s, an imprintable clothing distributor, with 200,000 square feet and Jacobson Companies, a third-party logistics provider, with 50,000 square feet.
